Job Overview
The Trainee Specification Technician will support the Specification Team with the preparation of technical drawings, quotations, bills of materials, and product documentation for the company’s UK door range.
This is an entry-level role, ideal for a graduate, school leaver, or someone looking to start a career in a technical role within the construction, manufacturing, or door industry. Full training will be provided.
Working closely with the sales, production, and technical teams, the Trainee Specification Technician will learn how to prepare accurate product specifications, understand customer requirements, and develop knowledge of door systems, hardware, and UK compliance standards.
The role offers excellent development opportunities, with the aim of progressing into a more senior technical specification position over time.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support & Documentation
- Assist with preparing technical quotations using company systems and design tools
- Support the creation of standard and project-specific door specifications
- Help maintain accurate technical drawings, records, and documentation
- Learn how to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and customer requirements
Bills of Materials & Quotation Support
- Assist with the preparation of bills of materials under guidance from senior colleagues
- Support the quotation process by checking information is accurate and consistent
- Help ensure drawings, specifications, and bills of materials match customer requirements
Product Knowledge & Compliance
- Develop an understanding of door products, hardware, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Learn about UK fire, security, and acoustic requirements relating to door sets
- Assist with basic compliance checks and raise any potential issues with senior team members
- Support new product documentation where required
Sales & Customer Support
- Provide basic technical support to the sales team
- Help respond to customer information requests and specification queries
- Support senior colleagues with customer meetings, site visits, or project discussions where required
Teamwork & Communication
- Work with production teams to understand how products are manufactured
- Liaise with technical, commercial, and operations teams to help ensure accurate information flow
- Build strong working relationships across the business
Learning & Development
- Take part in training to develop technical knowledge of door systems and industry standards
- Support the preparation of internal training materials and CPD content
- Gradually take ownership of simpler specifications as skills and confidence develop
Skills & Attributes
- Good attention to detail
- Willingness to learn and develop technical knowledge
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office
- An interest in construction, manufacturing, design, engineering, or technical products
- Ability to follow processes and work accurately
- Positive attitude and willingness to ask questions
Experience & Qualifications
- Suitable for a college leaver, apprentice, or graduate
- No previous industry experience required, as full training will be provided
- An interest in technical drawings, construction, manufacturing, or engineering would be beneficial
- GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English preferred
- A relevant qualification in design, engineering, construction, manufacturing, or a technical subject would be an advantage but is not essential
